A good <a title=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/careers\/resources\/interviewillegal.htm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/careers\/resources\/interviewillegal.htm\" target=\"_blank\">rule of thumb<\/a> is to stick to questions that have to do with the job\u2019s functions. For example, a employer cannot ask if you\u2019re married or have kids, but he or she can ask if your schedule will allow for travel or working overtime if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few basic dos and don\u2019ts for employers to keep in mind as they put together a list of <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/list_7473792_legal-employment-questions.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/list_7473792_legal-employment-questions.html\" target=\"_blank\">legal interview questions<\/a> to ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do ask questions that will determine if a client is qualified, such as skills, certifications or related work history that would be relevant to the position.<!--more--><\/li>\n<li>Do ask if they\u2019re qualified to work in the United States or what languages they speak, read or write fluently.<\/li>\n<li>If the applicant was in the military, do ask about the training or education they received. You cannot ask if they were honorably discharged or which branch they served in, though.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on the job you\u2019re hiring for, do feel free to \u201cGoogle\u201d the potential employee to see what information is public about them, but don\u2019t ask for any <a title=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9225504\/Facebook_tells_employers_not_to_ask_job_seekers_for_log_in_info\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9225504\/Facebook_tells_employers_not_to_ask_job_seekers_for_log_in_info\" target=\"_blank\">social media login<\/a> information (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc).<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t ask questions of a personal nature, including those that relate to religious beliefs, family status, nation of origin, age, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t ask about their current health status or if they have any disabilities. Instead, ask if they can perform the specific job duties or if they can fulfill the job responsibilities with reasonable accommodations.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t ask about any clubs or social organizations he or she belongs to.
